Company History:
In 1892, The General Electric Company was formed by merging the Edison General Electric Company and the Thomson-Houston Company. In 1900, General Electric established the first laboratory in U.S. industry dedicated to scientific research. The Laboratory was located in Schenectady, NY.
The GE Credit Corporation was created in 1932 to help finance the sale of GE Appliances to American families. Consumer financing by the General Electric Contracts Corporation was made available to meet the widespread demand for the new variety of electric appliances.
In 1993, GE entered the consumer financial security market with the purchase of Seattle-based GNA Corp. After adding to its portfolio by purchasing AMEX Life Assurance - a leading provider of long term care insurance - and a number of smaller, strategically-positioned companies, GE significantly increased its market presence by purchasing Life of Virginia (now GE Life & Annuity), First Colony Life, and Union Fidelity in 1996. At that time, GE brought together all of its consumer insurance and investment businesses to create what is now GE Financial.
