John Hancock Financial Services Inc. is a financial services company that provides insurance and investment products and services to retail and institutional customers, primarily in North America. The company operates its business in five segments. Two segments serve primarily retail customers and two segments serve primarily institutional customers. John Hancock's retail segments are the protection segment and the asset-gathering segment. Its institutional segments are the guaranteed and structured financial products segment and the investment management segment. Company History
On April 21, 1862, the charter of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company was approved by John A. Andrew, governor of Massachusetts.
The company's first office was a single room in the rear of a building at 41 State Street. On October 14, 1862, the Board of Directors met for the first time and elected Judge George P. Sanger president of the company.
Named after John Hancock, first governor of Massachusetts and first signer of the Declaration of Independence and president of the Second Continental Congress. Today, John Hancock is one of the largest insurance and investment companies in the U.S. with several thousand associates around the globe and numerous subsidiary companies. John Hancock offers financial products from life insurance, annuities, and mutual funds to long-term care insurance coverage.
